I just recently found this rapper when I was watching Nardwuar interviews (The man is a genius by the way). Action Bronson the Albanian Chef turned MC out of Queens  has been making some waves lately with his decidedly New York flow and his colourful lyrics. His newest mixtape Blue Chips (which takes it’s name from the 1994 Basketball Drama film) sees him teamed up with MPC wonderboy and gifted sampler Party Supplies. The first thing I thought, which is probably the same as what most rap fans probably thought, is that his style is almost identical to Wu Tang’s Ghostface Killah in terms of flow and attitude in his verses, even the voice is similar. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing because being compared to anybody in Wu Tang especially favourably can only be seen as a compliment and over the length of the mixtape he does manage to win you over on his own merit without having to rely on sounding like Ghost. The mixtape itself is interesting to say the least. Aside from the fact that many of the song titles are one liners in the song or simply random names the structure of the songs are also somewhat strange. The song Dreamer starts out with Bronson murdering the beat as usual and ends with the beat actually ending and Party Supplies mentioning the beat cutting out as an accident which results in a 50 second song. Bronson also seems to improvise some lines and will stop mid verse at times to mention that he messed up or that he doesn’t like the line. This improvisational style keeps Bronson’s verses fresh and the mixtape interesting. This is definitely one to check out if you like that New York style and some amazing lyricism, not to mention Party Supplies keeping the smooth beats coming. Check out Blue Chips by Action Bronson and Party Supplies.

I used to think I was super cool for knowing about Stalley when he was this bearded guy popping up in creative control videos and hanging out at DD172. I guess I can’t keep him under wraps anymore. This “Savage Journey” mixtape is more than worth a few listens.

Smoke DZA - Cuz I Felt Like It (FreEP)
“I was on Nah Right on Saturday scrolling thru being a fan, trying to see what’s going on in the music world. Young Roddy dropped a tape on Sunday and I got inspired and felt like rappin’. So I called my engineer Mat Cody up and told him to come to the trap. I rapped over some of my friends beats plus a few other tunes I thought was cool, hit 2 of my homies from Harlem, and put it out for free cuz I felt like it. #Rrrright” – DZA
